A lava flow meets the sea. Observers watch the spectacle of a large lava flow pouring into the sea on the coast of Hawaii. The lava comes from the volcano Kilauea, some 11 kilometres inland. Kilauea is a large shield volcano which emits a very fluid basaltic lava. Eruptions are very rarely explosive, although some spectacular lava fountains have been seen. A fairly constant stream of lava has been flowing from the volcano since 1983,adding to the size of the island | |
