Deep sea vent. Volcanic gases bubble up from a sulphur-encrusted geothermal vent on the ocean floor. These bubbles contain gases and steam heat- by geothermal energy in the Earth's crust. Sulphur ejected by the vent has been deposited around the hole (white). Deep sea vents provide an unusual habitat that some organisms are able to exploit. Some primitive forms of bacteria are able to derive energy from the sulphur, avoiding the need for sunlight or carbohydrates.
