Marine layer over the south-facing side of Santa Catalina Island,California,USA (July 2007) Overcast skies and low clouds are common in California during spring and summer months. Such weather pattern is known locally as June Gloom or May Gray. During the night clouds are blown ashore from the ocean. Early mornings are often foggy,with an occasional light rain. By late morning the clouds typically are burned away by the sun in the inland areas. However,near the coast the clouds and fog can stay on for most of the day. Such cool,moist,foggy layer of air is called a marine layer,it is kept close to the surface by a warmer layer above. Called inversion layer,it also traps pollutants and is responsible for persistent smog in the greater Los Angeles area
