Von Karmen vortices. Optical space shuttle image of cloud formations due to Von Karmen vortices (swirls). Von Karmen vortices occur due to the disturbance of air as it blows over an island. The flow pattern of the vortices is generally of circular eddies which rotate in alternate directions. The formation of Von Karmen vortices requires wind speeds of 5 to 13 metres per second and a strong low-level temperature inversion. A temperature inversion is an occasion when the temperature of the air increases with altitude rather than decreases.
