Child coal miners. Boys after a day's work underground at a coal mine in Pennsylvania,USA,in around 1910. The five boys in the front rows are nippers (holding oil lamps) and drivers (holding wooden stakes). Nippers (door boys) opened and closed doors to allow coal carts (hauled by mules controlled by the drivers) to pass, maintaining the mine's ventilation system. All worked at depths of around 1500 metres. Photographed by US sociologist and photographer Lewis Wickes Hine (1874-1940). Hine worked for the National Child Labor Committee (NCLC),documenting working and living conditions for children, and campaigning against child labour and poverty | |
