Marie Curie at the White House. Polish-French physicist and chemist Marie Curie (1867-1934) being escorted down the steps of the White House by US President Warren G. Harding (1865-1923). He had presented her with a certificate for the gift to her of a gram of radium on behalf of the women of America to honour her discovery of this radioactive element. Curie's daughters were present,as well as more than 100 scientists and diplomats from Poland and France. Marie had received the 1911 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for her discovery of polonium and radium. She and her husband Pierre (1859-1906) had shared the 1903 Nobel Prize in Physics for their work on radioactivity. Photographed in Washington DC,USA,on 20 May 1921 | |
