TW Hydrae protoplanetary disc. Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA) image of the central region of the protoplanetary disc around the nearby young star TW Hydrae. Rings and gaps in protoplanetary discs indicate the presence of emerging planets as they sweep their orbits clear of dust and gas. This image shows a gap in the disc at 1 AU (Astronomical Unit, the distance from the Earth to the Sun in the Solar System),suggesting that a planet with a similar orbit to Earth is forming there. This Sun-like star is located around 176 light years from Earth in the constellation of Hydra. This image, published in 2016,was obtained using the 870-micrometre ALMA radio band.
