Colostomy following bowel surgery. Surgical wound and colostomy on the abdomen of a patient who has just undergone a Hartmann procedure to treat perforated diverticulitis. Diverticulitis is the formation of pouches within the intestinal wall. Here,the pouch ruptured,requiring surgery. A Hartmann procedure involves removal (resection) of the rectosigmoid section of the colon (large intestine). The rectal end of the colon is then closed and the other end is brought through the abdominal wall to form a colostomy. Here,an ostomy bag is in place over the colostomy to collect the bowel contents
