Jupiter. Crop of an infrared image of Jupiter obtained by the VISIR instrument on the European Southern Observatory's Very Large Telescope (VLT). VISIR is the VLT spectrometer and imager for the mid-infrared. These images were obtained as part of preparations for the imminent arrival of NASA's Juno spacecraft at the planet in July 2016. The aim is to create high-resolution maps of the gas giant planet. This false-colour image was created by selecting and combining the best images obtained from many short VISIR exposures at a wavelength of 5 micrometres. Image published in June 2016.
