Desert roses are characteristic mineral aggregates formed by tabular crystals of gypsum (Calcium sulfate dehydrate) that stand out radially like rose petals. They are formed by sub-crystalline precipitation of gypsum in or near evaporating water pools, with some of the surrounding sand incorporated in the crystal blades formed. They are found in areas with an arid climate worldwide. Actual size is 13 cm | |
