Molten Salt Reactor Experiment. Close-up of a high-temperature solvent extraction column being developed for the reductive extraction of protactinium and fission products from the Molten Salt Reactor Experiment (MSRE). The molten fluoride salt is being treated with liquid bismuth. The MSRE was operated at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL),Oak Ridge,Tennessee,USA,from 1965 to 1969. It was an experimental molten salt reactor, generating energy from nuclear reactions in a molten salt mixture. In this case the fuel and coolant was a mixture of uranium and a fluoride salt.
