Colostomy and negative-pressure wound. Closed and dressed surgical wound (left) and colostomy (right) on the abdomen of a patient who has undergone a Hartmann procedure to treat perforated diverticulitis. Diverticulitis is the formation of pouches within the intestinal wall. Here, the pouch ruptured, requiring surgery. A Hartmann procedure involves removal (resection) of the rectosigmoid section of the colon (large intestine). The rectal end of the colon is then closed and the other end is brought through the abdominal wall to form a colostomy. Here, the wound has been dressed with a negative-pressure dressing. This technique uses a vacuum dressing that applies controlled pressure to the wound in order to promote healing | |
