Murchison Falls on the Shire River. Illustration of the cataracts on the Shire River, named for Roderick Murchison by British missionary and explorer David Livingstone (1813-1873) in 1859. Now known as Kapichira Falls (in Malawi),these cataracts prevented further travel by boat, and Livingstone was forced to complete his expedition overland, reaching Lake Malawi (Lake Nyassa) later that year. Livingstone explored southern Africa, wrote accounts of the native peoples, and campaigned against slavery. Lauded as a hero in Victorian Britain,he died in Africa.
