| Livingstone on the Zambezi. Illustration of the steamboat Ma-Robert in 1858 on the Zambezi during an expedition by British missionary and explorer David Livingstone (1813-1873). Livingstone studied medicine and theology in Glasgow before being ordained in 1840. He explored southern Africa,travelled along the Zambesi River,and discovered and named the Victoria Falls. He mapped parts of Africa's interior,wrote accounts of the native peoples,and campaigned against slavery. Lauded as a hero in Victorian Britain,he died in Africa,where his heart was interred.
