African ox wagon travel. Illustration of travellers using an ox wagon in southern Africa. This mode of travel was used by explorers such as British missionary David Livingstone (1813-1873). Livingstone studied medicine and theology in Glasgow before being ordained in 1840. He explored southern Africa, travelled along the Zambesi River, and discovered and named the Victoria Falls. He mapped parts of Africa's interior, wrote accounts of the native peoples, and campaigned against slavery. Lauded as a hero in Victorian Britain,he died in Africa.
