Magellanic Clouds. Composite image of the polarised light emitted by interstellar dust, showing the magnetic field in the region of the Magellanic Clouds. The Large Magellan Cloud (centre) is about 160 000 light-years away. The Small Magellan Cloud, about 200 000 light-years away,is to the lower left. Both are classed as dwarf galaxies. The diagonal filament of interstellar dust between them is closer, about 300 light-years away. The colour scale represents the total intensity of dust emission, with the striations indicating the direction of the magnetic field projected on the plane of the sky.
