Sentinel-3 satellite in orbit over an algal bloom (light blue) in the North Sea,artwork. This satellite mission has been developed by the European Space Agency for the Copernicus Programme (formerly the European Global Monitoring for Environment and Security programme). The first of three Sentinel-3 satellites was launched on 16 February 2016. Their objective is to measure sea-surface topography, temperature of sea and land surfaces, and to record the colour of sea and land, for the purposes of environmental and climate monitoring. The Ocean and Land Colour Instrument provides data which will improve the prediction of harmful algal blooms, help manage oceanic food sources, and monitor marine pollutants | |
