Iron (III) and iron (II) hydroxides precipitates. Iron (III),left, and iron (II),right, hydroxides precipitates formed by adding few drops of a 1M solution of sodium hydroxide (NaOH) to 0.2 M solutions of ferric chloride (FeCl3) and ferrous sulfate (FeSO4),respectively. The reactions are FeCl3 + NaOH -> Fe(OH)3 + NaCl and FeSO4 + NaOH -> Fe(OH)2 + Na2SO4. These are examples of a double replacement reaction. Pure iron (II) hydroxide is white, however even trace amounts of oxygen make it greenish | |
