This sagital,T1-weighted MR image of the thoracic spine shows marked loss of normal signal (looks darker than normal) of 2 upper thoracic vertebral bodies with destruction of their endplates,increased surrounding soft tissue extending into the ventral epidural space and compressing the spinal cord. The epidural component is an abscess/phlegmon. This represents discitis (disc space infection) and vertebral osteomyelitis (bone infection). These are often blood borne organisms deposited in these locations secondary to bacteraemia (infections in the blood stream)
