Robinson's anemometer. Illustration of the anemometer invented in 1846 by Irish astronomer Thomas Romney Robinson (1792-1882) of Armagh Observatory. An anemometer,a device for measuring wind speed,is a common weather station instrument. This design consists of four hemispherical cups each mounted on one end of four horizontal arms, which in turn are mounted at equal angles to each other on a vertical shaft. The air flow past the cups in any horizontal direction turns the cups at a rate proportional to the wind speed. The turns of the cups over time are recorded by the set of dials at lower left | |
