The vertebral endplate is the bone interface between the intervertebral disc and the vertebral body. In this image a small section of the endplate has been removed and exposes the top edge of the disc. The hair-like structures projecting upward from the disc into the bone are known as Sharpey's fibres. The outer portion of the disc is seen in the lower central portion of the image. Extensive bone marrow (red) is noted in the upper central portion of the image. The small round balls noted scattered along the endplate represent nutrients and oxygen that cross the endplate into the outer disc in a process known as imbibition | |
