Eternal Flame Falls is in Chestnut Ridge Park located near Orchard Park New York. This 10 meter waterfall cuts through a layer of Hanover Shale of the Late Devonian Epoch that is 85 to 95-feet thick. This shale is greenish-gray to gray colored with some black bands. Natural gas leaks from a seam in the rocks under the waterfall. This natural gas deposit can be easily found by its strong smell of hydrogen sulfide or the smell of rotten eggs. When the flame is lit the smell substantially subsides. Methane is a gas at room temperature and pressure, and the main component of natural gas | |
