California is home to the world's only known group of bioluminescent millipedes, genus Motyxia. The light produced by these millipedes apparently ranges from white to greenish white. This is a demonstration of fluorescence under black light. Fluorescence is defined as visible light emitted by a substance that has absorbed light of a different wavelength. Motyxia sequoia alia is one of the bioluminescent species from the southern Sierra Nevada range. Compare to images taken under natural light and by its own light | |
