US$1 banknote was imprinted on an agar gel plate containing a nutrient medium for 5 minutes and removed. Bacteria and fungal spores transferred by the imprinting process started to grow on the agar plate (poured on a large blue plate) and formed colonies. Here is a color-enhanced image after 3 days of development. Bacterial colonies look like drops of a liquid (compact and shiny) but fungal colonies look grainy as the hyphae grow each separately - a black mold colony appears near the left lower corner. The microorganisms (germs) grew only where the dollar bill was in contact with the agar gel. The image indicates that banknotes harbor a wide variety of microorganisms and that it is a good idea to wash one's hands after handling paper money | |
