Florida Spanish Cattle (aka Cracker Cattle). Today's cracker cattle are descendants of cattle left by Juan Ponce De Leon, and have played a major role in the development of Florida both before and after the Civil War. The breed has declined due to interbreeding with other stock. The activity of a few Florida ranching families to retain the pure root stock is all that has saved the breed. Wild cattle can be found at the Paynes Prairie Preserve in Florida, where they were predominant during Spanish times. Cracker cattle are prized as living, tangible links to Florida's past.
