| Sputter coating a specimen. Sputter coating is a process in which is specimen is coated in a thin layer of heavy metal. This increases a specimen's ability to emit secondary electrons and conduct electricity. Glow discharge (the purple diffuse cloud inside the transparent cylinder) at high voltage in an argon atmosphere carries gold molecules towards the samples located in the six wells below. The gold atoms bounce on their way towards the samples due to collisions with argon atoms and are deposited on the samples from various directions thus ensuring the formation of an uninterrupted electrically conductive gold coating (usually 20 nanometers thin).
