Laysan Albatross (Phoebastria immutabilis) pair,Kilauea NWR,Kaua'i,Hawaii. The Laysan Albatross is a large seabird of the northern Pacific Ocean. It spends its summer months out at sea and returns to a select few islands during the northern winter to breed. This species is able to breed at 8 or 9 years of age; an elaborate 'dance' establishes a monogamous pair bond that is only broken with death or disappearance. Pairs return to the same area (usually within only a few meters) to nest each year. Laysan Albatrosses generally feed at night when their prey rises to the surface of the ocean. These birds possess a high level of rhodosin,a visual pigment, that improves night vision | |
