Grape vine tendril. Spiral green tendrils of a grape vine Vitis sp.,which have secured themselves to the brown woody stalk of an unidentified plant. Tendrils are modified leaves or stems used to grip nearby objects for support. In this way the grape vine acts like a parasite, using the structural strength of its neighbour to climb upwards and use some of the light that would have been used by the neighbouring plant. The tendrils' shape is caused by the cells on one side growing slightly shorter than those on the other. In most varieties of grape, the tendrils are produced opposite two out of every three successive leaves | |
