Quaking Aspens (Populus tremuloides) stand 40 -70 feet tall with a smooth white trunk that is 1-2 ft. in diameter. This tree is deciduous with round leaves that turn yellow in the fall. Aspens flower in very early spring, producing small narrow cones that split to release copious amounts of tiny, cottony seeds that are dispersed by the wind. Reproduction, however,is almost entirely vegetative, with suckers sprouting from existing root systems. Aspens tend to grow in groups of pure strains as a result of this clonal reproductive strategy.
