Venus flytrap (image 1 of 3). Cricket approaching a Venus flytrap (Dionaea muscipula). This plant captures insects in its hinged two-lobed leaves. Insects that move onto the lobes trigger touch- sensitive hairs on their inner surface, causing the leaf to close. The insect, trapped behind the interlocking spines,is then digested by enzymes. The Venus flytrap is native to the bogs of South and North Carolina,USA. Its carnivorous diet provides it with nutrients that it could not otherwise obtain from the poor soils in which it grows.
