Spirulina algae. Light micrograph of a single strand of Spirulina platensis,a type of blue green alga or cyanobacterium. The strand consists of individual cells joined together. Blue-green algae are primitive, prokaryotic organisms which do not contain a membrane-bound nucleus. Their nuclear material is dispersed throughout the cell in a similar way to that of bacteria. The algae make their food by photosynthesis in primitive,thread-like structures called lamellae. Some Spirulina species are eaten as a protein-rich health food. Phase contrast image.
