Spirulina algae. Light micrograph, using phase contrast,of rows of unicellular blue-green algae,Spirulina major. Blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) are primitive algae, producing their food from sunlight using photosynthesis. Their internal structure is closely related to bacteria. They are prokaryotic organisms which contain no membrane-bound nucleus; instead,as in bacteria, their nuclear material is dispersed throughout the cell. Some Spirulina species are eaten as a protein-rich health food. Phase contrast images reduce the colour saturation of objects, allowing greater detail to be seen. Magnification: x25 at 35mm size | |
