Neisseria gonorrhoea. Illustration based on a Transmission Electron Micrograph (TEM) of N. gonorrhoea, the bacteria that cause the sexually transmitted disease gonorrhoea. These bacteria are classed as gram-negative. Their rounded cells (cocci) are usually found stuck together in pairs. The hair-like protein filaments on the cell surface (called pili) help the bacteria bind to cells in the human body during an infection. Gonorrhea,or "the clap",causes pain on urination and a discharge of pus from the vagina or penis. Sometimes there are no symptoms; in other cases complications develop, potentially leading to sterility. Magnification unknown | |
