Gold nugget. Large gold nugget known as 'Tom's Baby'. This nugget,which weighs over 6 kg,was name after the miner Tom Groves who discovered it in Colorado,USA,in 1887. Gold has an atomic number of 79 and has a relative atomic mass of 196.97. It appears in nature as a free metal (known as native gold). Gold forms the basis of monetary systems and is used as jewellery,due to its rarity,attractive appearance and lack of tarnishing.
