Musk oxen (Ovibos moschatus) grazing. Musk oxen form herds of 10-100 animals, led by one or more dominant males. The musk ox is named for the smell of musk given off by the males during the mating season. Musk oxen inhabit the tundra from Canada to Greenland. Tundra is the flat, treeless Arctic region that lies between the polar regions of perpetual snow and ice and the northern limit of tree growth. In the short summer the surface layer of the frozen ground (permafrost) thaws and the surface snows melt. This allows the musk oxen to graze on the mosses, lichens and other low vegetation.
