Wildebeest. Herd of blue wildebeest (Connochaetes taurinus),or brindled gnu, jumping into a river. Many of the wildebeest will not survive this crossing. They will either drown or be eaten by waiting crocodiles. These animals inhabit the plains and woodlands of south-eastern Africa, grazing on fresh grass. They are social animals, living in herds numbering several thousands of individuals, especially when migrating great distances to reach fresh pasture. Both sexes grow short curved horns. Blue wildebeest are an important prey animal for large carnivores such as lions. Photographed in Masai Mara Game Reserve,Kenya,Africa | |
