Male red hartebeest (Alcelaphus buselaphus caama). This gregarious antelope often forms large herds that include other antelopes and zebras. The horns are present in both sexes and vary in shape between individuals, but they always grow from the centre of the head. It feeds on grasses (even the driest types) and,in contrast to many other antelopes, does not require water daily. The hartebeest is a favourite prey animal for lions. It is found in savanna and sparse scrubland in south-western Africa. Photographed in the Etosha National Park,Namibia | |
