Thomson's gazelles. View of a fleeing herd of Thomson's gazelles (Gazella thomsoni) on grassland. Also seen in the background,at centre, are ostrich (Stuthio camelus). Thomson's gazelles inhabit the open plains and grasslands of Africa. They live in large herds, but these are very loose associations, and herds fragment and merge, and members drift between herds seemingly randomly. Dominant males mark out territories, and fights between neighbours are not uncommon. Thomson's gazelles eat mainly grass, with some shoots and leaves. Photographed in the Masai Mara reserve,Kenya | |
