White rhinoceros (Ceratotherium simum) male scent- marking his territory. This large herbivore spends almost its entire life on a home range. A dominant male (bull) marks this territory by spraying urine (as seen here),spreading dung, dragging his feet and by damaging plants. He will chase invading males from his range, but tolerate females and immature males. The white rhinoceros inhabits the open forests and scrub of south-eastern Africa, feeding mainly on shoots and leaves. Extensive hunting for its horns, which have long been thought of as an aphrodisiac, means that it is now highly endangered. Photographed in the Mkuzi Game Reserve,South Africa | |
