Dartmoor ponies grooming one another. Dartmoor ponies (Equus caballus) have been used as beasts of burden since Medieval times and later as pit ponies. During this period there was large scale interbreeding with Shetland ponies which led to a decline in their numbers as did its use during the two World Wars. The 1980s saw an introduction of breeding programmes to increase numbers. The pony is a popular choice for equestrian sports and for teaching children to ride.
