Elephants. Two young African elephants (Loxodonta africana) in grassland. The African elephant is a social herbivore which inhabits the savannah and forests of sub-Saharan Africa. Young are weaned after around three years, but stay with their mother for much longer. Females usually stay with their family group, while mature males leave to find mates. Groups are ruled by an elderly matriarch. The elephant communicates using a wide variety of low frequency sounds which can travel great distances through its environment. It is the largest land animal, reaching up to 7000 kilograms in weight in the adult male | |
