Southern elephant seal. Close-up of the face of a female southern elephant seal (Mirounga leonina). This is the largest seal; a male may reach over six metres in length, although females are far smaller. It inhabits the waters around the Antarctic, spending most of its life at sea. It dives to hunt for fish and squid, coming ashore only to mate, moult and give birth. The male has a trunk-like proboscis, which is responsible for the seal's name. Photographed on South Georgia | |
