Steller's sea lions (Eumetopias jubatus). They are the largest member of the eared seal family (Otariidae). They are found on the Pacific Rim from northern Japan to California. They dive for fish, squid and octopus and occasionally prey on other seal species. The males weigh twice as much as the females and are muscular and aggressive. They are territorial and compete to control harems (groups of females). Steller's sea lions are popular with tourists and are often seen basking on rocks. Their preference for commercial fish species such as walleye pollock, salmon and mackerel has led to competition with humans; they are now endangered. Photographed in Alaska,USA | |
