Lioness stalking prey. Female lion (Panthera leo) stalking a prey animal (not seen). A lion pride's hunting is performed by the females, the male forcibly taking his own share after the kill has been made. Pride-mates hunt cooperatively; the prey (usually a large herbivore) is surrounded by the group and ambushed by a hidden lone lioness. P. leo was originally found in savannah and scrubland throughout Africa and southern Asia. Habitat changes and hunting have restricted its range to sub-Saharan Africa and to scattered areas in India.
