Brown hyena. Brown hyena (Hyaena brunnea) scent marking a patch of ground, which enables it to delineate its territory. This carnivore is largely solitary and is extremely shy. It is almost entirely nocturnal, typically hunting small prey such as hares or scavenging on the carcasses of larger animals. During the day it rests in natural or self-dug holes in the ground. Originally found throughout southern Africa, the brown hyena has become increasingly rare due to culling by farmers who believe, wrongly, that it is responsible for cattle losses.
