Humpback whale's tail. This whale (Megaptera novaeangliae) often leaps out of the water and beats the surface with its tail, possibly as a form of communication. It is found throughout the world's oceans and is a migrant, spending the winter in tropical waters, where it breeds and gives birth. For the rest of the year it inhabits colder waters, where it feeds on fish and krill. Adult humpback whales weigh around 27 tonnes and can reach 15 metres in length.
