Red squirrel (Sciurus vulgaris) on a feeder. The red squirrel is Britain's only native squirrel. It does not hibernate and remains active throughout the winter. However,in early spring, they run the risk of starvation as natural food supplies dwindle before the summer growth. Squirrel feeders can help the animals through the lean period and improve their chances of surviving and breeding successfully. The feeder container has a lid on it to prevent birds from reaching the food. Photographed in Northumberland National Park,UK | |
