Cape ground squirrels (Xerus inauris) touching noses. This rodent lives in arid open areas in southern Africa, where it digs an extensive burrow system. The burrow is occupied by a colony of between 5 and 30 squirrels. The cape ground squirrel has a high level of social organisation. Female cape ground squirrels cooperate in raising their young, while males live amicably in bachelor groups. Photographed in Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park in South Africa | |
