Nine-banded armadillo (Dasypus novemcinctus) in grass. This omnivorous mammal is found in South America,but its range has steadily been expanding into North America and the southern USA. It has a distinctive banded turtle-like shell (carapace),and a long snout that is used with its front feet for digging. It mostly eats insects and other invertebrates,as well as carrion and some plant material. Body length can be 40-60 centimetres. It is generally nocturnal. Photographed in Orlando,Florida,USA | |
