A frugivorous bat,Micronycteris sp,found on the Caribbean island of Trinidad. The exclusively fruit diet of the fruit bats has resulted in particular adaptions of the facial structure and teeth. The eyeteeth, which are well developed and relatively long, together with the small incisors, cut or open the skin of fruits. The flattened back molar teeth then crush the fruit pulp. When eating, the fruit bat often uses one foot to hold the fruit and bring it to its mouth. There are also many papillae on the upper surface of the long tongue, these apparently help in the breaking down of the fruit | |
